Gombloh (lahir di
Jombang, Jawa Timur, 14 Juli 1948 – meninggal di
Surabaya, Jawa Timur, 9 Januari 1988 pada umur 39 tahun) . Ia dilahirkan dengan nama asli
Soedjarwoto Soemarsono di
Jombang.
Masa muda Gombloh
Gombloh dilahirkan sebagai anak ke-4 dari enam bersaudara dalam keluarga Slamet dan Tatoekah. Slamet adalah seorang pedagang kecil yang hidup dari menjual
ayam potong di pasar tradisional di kota mereka. Sebagai keluarga sederhana, Slamet sangat berharap agar anak-anaknya dapat bersekolah setinggi mungkin hingga memiliki kehidupan yang lebih baik. Gombloh menyelesaikan pendidikan sekolah di
SMA Negeri 5 Surabaya dan sempat berkuliah di Jurusan
Arsitektur Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, (ITS) Surabaya, namun tidak diselesaikannya dan memilih menuruti nalurinya untuk
bermusik. Gombloh pada kenyataannya tidak pernah berniat kuliah di
ITS, ia melakukannya karena kasihan dengan orang tuanya. Ia sering membolos. Kelakuannya ini akhirnya diketahui ayahnya setelah Slamet mendapat surat dari ITS yang memberikan peringatan.
Gombloh bereaksi dengan menghilang ke
Bali dan bertualang sebagai
seniman. Jiwanya yang bebas tidak dapat dikekang oleh disiplin yang ketat dan kuliah yang teratur.
Karier musik Gombloh
Gombloh adalah pencipta lagu
balada sejati. Ia bergabung dengan grup beraliran
art rock/orchestral rock bernama
Lemon Tree's Anno '69, yang musiknya mendapat pengaruh
ELP dan
Genesis. Leo Kristi dan
Franky Sahilatua juga pernah menjadi anggota grup ini.
Kehidupan sehari-hari rakyat kecil banyak digambarkan dalam lagu-lagunya, seperti
Doa Seorang Pelacur,
Kilang-Kilang,
Poligami Poligami,
Nyanyi Anak Seorang Pencuri,
Selamat Pagi Kotaku. Lirik-liriknya puitis dan misterius. Sebagaimana penyanyi balada semasanya, seperti
Iwan Fals dan
Ebiet G. Ade, Gombloh juga tergerak menulis lagu tentang (kerusakan) alam, salah satunya adalah
Berita Cuaca (lebih populer dengan nama
Lestari Alamku walaupun ini bukan judul yang sebenarnya). Lagu-lagu cintanya cenderung "nyeleneh", sama seperti karya Iwan Fals atau
Doel Sumbang, misalnya
Lepen ("got" dalam bahasa Jawa, tetapi di sini adalah singkatan dari "lelucon pendek").
Namun demikian, ia memiliki tema khas yaitu
nasionalisme di dalam lagu-lagunya, seperti
Dewa Ruci,
Gugur Bunga,
Gaung Mojokerto-Surabaya,
Indonesia Kami,
Indonesiaku, Indonesiamu,
Pesan Buat Negeriku, dan
BK, lagu yang bertutur tentang
Bung Karno, sang proklamator. Lagunya
Kebyar Kebyar banyak dinyanyikan di masa perjuangan menuntut
Reformasi.
Bersama Lemon Tree's ia pernah pula merilis album yang lagu-lagunya
berbahasa Jawa dengan berjudul "Sekar Mayang".
Hong Wilaheng, yang adalah versi
reprise dari lagu
Sekar Mayang dan masuk dalam album "Berita Cuaca", menggunakan lirik yang diambil dari
Serat Wedhatama.
Gombloh juga menulis lagu untuk penyanyi lain. Ia menulis
Tangis Kerinduan bagi
Djatu Parmawati dirilis (1988), juga
Merah Putih (1986) untuk dinyanyikan bersama-sama.
Semenjak album Gila, Gombloh dinilai para kritisi mengendurkan idealismenya, dengan lebih mengedepankan album bergaya pop ringan dan dengan lirik-lirik sederhana dan jenaka. Namun dengan demikian ia menjadi lebih populer dan mendapat penghasilan yang besar. Ia tidak menjadi kaya dengan itu, karena lebih suka menghabiskan pendapatannya dengan makan-makan bersama kawan-kawannya. Rasa kesetiakawanannya dan jiwa merdeka inilah yang secara tidak langsung membawanya pada penyakit yang kelak merenggut nyawanya.
Kematian dan penghargaan Gombloh
Gombloh meninggal dunia di
Surabaya pada
9 Januari 1988 setelah lama menderita penyakit pada
paru-parunya. Kebiasaan merokoknya sulit dihilangkan dan ia dikabarkan sering begadang. Menurut salah seorang temannya, beberapa waktu sebelum meninggal, sering kali Gombloh mengeluarkan
darah bila sedang bicara atau bersin.
Pada 1996 sejumlah seniman Surabaya membentuk
Solidaritas Seniman Surabaya dengan tujuan menciptakan suatu kenangan untuk Gombloh yang dianggap sebagai
pahlawan seniman kota itu. Mereka sepakat membuat patung Gombloh seberat 200 kg dari
perunggu. Patung ini ditempatkan di halaman
Taman Hiburan Rakyat Surabaya, salah satu pusat kesenian di kota itu. Pada tanggal 30 Maret 2005 dalam acara puncak Hari Musik Indonesia III di Jakarta, Gombloh mendapat penghargaan
Nugraha Bhakti Musik Indonesia secara
anumerta dari
PAPPRI, bersama sembilan tokoh musik lainnya, yaitu:

Lagu-lagu karya Gombloh sempat diangkat dalam penelitian
Martin Hatch seorang peneliti dari
Universitas Cornell dan ditulis sebagai
karya ilmiah yang berjudul "
Social Criticsm in the Songs of 1980’s Indonesian Pop Country Singers", yang dibawakan dalam seminar musik
The Society of Ethnomusicology di Toronto, Kanada pada 2000.
